Homemade Herbal Hand Sanitizer

Hopefully you made it through the season without getting nailed to the bed by the flu. Keeping your hands clean is the most important thing a person can do to avoid picking up a virus. But what happens when you realize you just grabbed a dirty door handle or caught your balance on an escalator rail and there’s no sink in sight? You can reach into your pocket or purse for a commercial bottle of sanitizer or better yet, make your own. Homemade sanitizer is both cheaper and better for you!

Liquid hand soap.

Here’s a great recipe that’s both effective and easy to make.

4 tablespoons (60 ml) pure aloe gel (if you have your own plant-and every herb lover probably does-simply break off a piece, cut it open and squeeze out the juice. If you have some hens and chicks available and they’re not under a snow bank, that works too.)
1/2 cup (125 ml) vodka or rubbing alcohol
5-8 drops tea tree or thyme essential oil
2 tablespoons (30 ml) vegetable glycerin (the glycerin simply minimizes the alcohol’s drying effect on the skin so is an optional ingredient).

Mix together and put in a suitable dispenser and you’re good to go!
